Essential Oils, Babies, and Children

Before using Young Living essential oils, most people are nervous about using oils with my babies and young children. But after learning about therapeutic grade oils, they realize that the danger is in using oils that were adulterated, contained solvents, and just aren’t pure. With that said, these oils are potent and safety is important. Here are some top tips when using essential oils for babies and young children:

  • Always dilute with a carrier oil or natural lotion. Learn about carrier oil here.
    • For babies, dilute 1-3 drops in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil.
    • For toddlers, dilute 1-3 drops in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil.
    • For young children, dilute 2-6 drops in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil.
  • Use 4-10 drop when diffusing. Diffuse less for stronger smelling oils and for babies.
  • Oils to avoid or use with caution for babies are (this includes topical use and diffusing):
    • Eucalyptus
    • Basil
    • Juniper
    • Peppermint
    • Hyssop
    • Wintergreen
  • Apply oils topically where the baby cannot lick or suck on the oils. If applying to feet, put socks on after applying the oils so the baby cannot suck on toes and ingest oils.

Here are some commonly used essential oils for babies and young children (use topically diluted or in the diffuser):
